Hi Samantha -

I talked to you about this on the phone, I think it was about Friday Aug 15th when we talked,
concerning this dance announcement for a Sunday September 7 event.

I think you said it could be up to 50 words.
The announcement that I have enclosed below (text in green) is approximately 45 words.

Round dancing is a form of ballroom dance since we learn and practice many rhythms just like ballroom dancing. But it also is different because we have cuers who tell us the name of each step so we don't have to memorize a routine.

For those Meridian Manor residents interested in continuing their ballroom dancing practice:

Here's some basic Round Dancing classes found using the web.
There may be MORE classes that I'm not aware of. This list of Mesa-area Round Dance Cuers shows a few more cuers.

I would recommend phoning the instructors, and "getting the details".

The biggest question is, "how fast do they progress" (time spent practicing one pattern, before advancing to the NEXT pattern).

rhythm, since it's "step on every beat" structure should make it easier
for the guys who are new to dancing.

List of Patterns:

1a. Box Step (w/o turn for practice) (6 counts, fwd on 1, back on 4. See chart at bottom for more detail about COUNTING the steps.)

1c. Balance Step, L & R: L, R behind, L recover; then R, L behind, R recover

3. Progressive Box (progressive, travels down the floor) (like box, but go forward on 4 instead of back)

4. Hesitation (left and right side draw touches)

~~~~~~~~
5. Right Turning Box (fwd on 4, back on 1; almost like Left Box, but turns R instead of L)
6 Six-Count Underarm Turn Ver. 2, M follows W (The man "follows" the
woman onto the circular 'track' {instead of waiting to "pick her up"}. You can view it by clicking the video "Thumbnail #3" in this Picasa album: https://picasaweb.google.com/ballroomdances.net/MmDance1#5855386867110735282 )
1. Box Step
Note the "1" count is Left foot for the man, Right foot for the woman.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Comments: The basic "box" footwork is not that difficult. For a new male dancer, the challenge is getting your feet "synched-up" with the music, plus leading your partner at the same time . . . . . plus planning your "next move", plus maneuvering around other couples.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We plan to start with the waltz "box" . . . usually the first pattern taught.
Note we're doing "American Style" waltz, not "International Style".
Tentatively we'll spend about 30 minutes walking through the basic step with no music.
rhythm, since it's "step on every beat" structure should make it easier
for the guys who are new to dancing.
3. Progressive Forward Changes (progressive, travels down the floor) (like box, but go forward on 4 instead of back)
4. Hesitation
5. Right Turning Box (fwd on 4, back on 1; almost like Left Box, but turns R instead of L)
Note the "1" count is Left foot for the man, Right foot for the woman.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Comments: The basic "box" footwork is not that difficult. For a new male dancer, the challenge is getting your feet "synched-up" with the music, plus leading your partner at the same time . . . . . plus planning your "next move", plus maneuvering around other couples.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We plan to start with the waltz "box" . . . usually the first pattern taught.
Note we're doing "American Style" waltz, not "International Style".
Tentatively we'll spend about 30 minutes walking through the basic step with no music.
But the "majority vote" of those attending will determine dance to be practiced (ie. waltz, swing, or something else).
~~The dance practice is not line dancing (although many steps are common). The
first evening may LOOK somewhat like a line dance session, as we may
spend most of the time with people doing the steps by themselves.
~~~~~We really think the "East Coast Triple-Step Swing" dance is the most USEFUL dance (can dance in bars, weddings, to live bands, almost anywhere).
But
several complained about the "guys getting lost" (as is quite common).
So we thought it best to START with waltz, since it's "step on every
beat" structure should make it easier for the guys who are new to
dancing.
The waltz may not be their favorite
dance, but practicing it should hopefully help with developing
"brain-to-feet" coordination. We hope to go SLOW enough, that people don't feel like they are getting "lost".
-
The
"plan" would be to start with waltz, move to single-step swing, then
triple-step swing -- although we'll probably run out of time long before
that happens.
Comment: We may START these dance practice sessions with the waltz
rhythm, since it's "step on every beat" structure should make it easier
for the guys who are new to dancing.
List of Patterns:
Note the "1" count is Left foot for the man, Right foot for the woman.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Comments: The basic "box" footwork is not that difficult. For a new male dancer, the challenge is getting your feet "synched-up" with the music, plus leading your partner at the same time . . . . . plus planning your "next move", plus maneuvering around other couples.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We plan to start with the waltz "box" . . . usually the first pattern taught.
Note we're doing "American Style" waltz, not "International Style".
Tentatively we'll spend about 30 minutes walking through the basic step with no music.
Note the "1" count is Left foot for the man, Right foot for the woman.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Comments: The basic "box" footwork is not that difficult. For a new male dancer, the challenge is getting your feet "synched-up" with the music, plus leading your partner at the same time . . . . . plus planning your "next move", plus maneuvering around other couples.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We plan to start with the waltz "box" . . . usually the first pattern taught.
Note we're doing "American Style" waltz, not "International Style".
Tentatively we'll spend about 30 minutes walking through the basic step with no music.

Beat 1 (or slightly before): Man steps on L foot as usual. Man raises L hand to cue Woman to turn. Also light pressure with his R hand on her shoulder if in closed position.

Beat 2: M pivots Left 1/2 turn on L foot, W pivots Right 1/2 turn on R foot

Beat 3: M steps on R foot as usual.

Note the rhythm is the same as the basic. The big difference is that:

For the basic, Beat 2 is a "hold" or a "wait".

But for this turn, on Beat 2 both partners are doing the 1/2 turn pivot on the ball of the foot they used for Beat 1 (the M's Left, and W's Right foot).

***Note we're NOT adding any steps. We're just adding a pivot 1/2 turn during Beat 2, using the ball of the foot that we already stepped on for Beat 1.

-
Said another way:

*For the basic you could count: "(1) Step (2) Wait, (3) Step (4) Wait, (5) Rock (6) Step".

*For this turn, you could count: "(1) Step (2) TURN, (3) Step (4) Wait, (5) Rock (6) Step"

Note for the "Triple Step Swing", this turn will be much easier, because you will have 6 steps instead of 2 steps to make the turn.

Note on Count "2", the man's foot (ideally) goes sort of "around the perimeter" of the box, not straight across diagonal.
